Malawi will in the next few years partner with ten international universities that will be offering 100 scholarships to Malawian students each year.

Founder of a United States of America charity organisation 100 X Development Foundation Lindy Blanchard told Zodiak Online that the initiative will bring together various universities together from the USA.

Ms Blanchard spoke in Lilongwe when her organisation offered scholarships to three girls to study in the United States of America.

“Our organisation has noted with concern that there are so many challenges in the country’s education system, especially at tertiary level”, said Ms Lindy Blanchard, who founded 100X Development Foundation.

She said the challenges are very clear especially in the tertiary sector where among other challenges there are not enough classrooms and bed space.

“For this reason, our organisation is currently discussing with the leadership of Troy University in Alabama, United States of America to try to institute satellite colleges and link them up with Malawian colleges,” Ms Blanchard said.

In this arrangement, 100X foundation will also bring in ten other universities which will offer 100 scholarships to Malawian students to study in the said colleges, said Blanchard.

“Our organisation has existed in Malawi for the past eight years, with our orphanage in Lilongwe and we have decided to branch off and promote tertiary education,” added the founder of 100 X foundation.

Two years ago, the organisation branched out to partner with six other governments and other business firms to ensure that they fund some of the students who will receive scholarships from the organisation.

The three students, all girls, scored seven points each during Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations and were part of the six girls Zodiak Broadcasting Station awarded last.

The other three got six points each and automatically earned a scholarship to study in China under the Zodiak/China initiative.

But President Joyce Banda, guest honour at the event, announced that she would also secure the other three a scholarship to study in the US.
