President Robert Mugabe welcomed Malawian President Joyce Banda today in Zimbabwe whom he has invited the to officially open this year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo.

The trip is Banda’s first official visit to Zimbabwe since taking over power after the death last year of her predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika, who was a close ally to Mugabe.

The president wrote this message on her official facebook page:

This afternoon I have arrived in Harare safely to meet President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Mr Robert Mugabe and discuss how the two countries can continue to work together to promote trade, investments, agricultural, energy and industrial production.

As you all know, Malawi , Zambia and Zimbabwe are former Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. That’s why there is a lot in common amongst these trio countries socially, culturally, politically and economically .

It is obvious that the spirit of togetherness and fortified unity of African nations is key to economic, social and political stability. Hence, my government believes that the continued international cooperation between Malawi and Zimbabwe will always be socially and economically beneficial to the people of Zimbabwe and Malawi.

It is important to point out that Zimbabwe is currently Malawi’s second largest trading partner making a total value of US $ 2 Billion dollars of trade per year .

I wish to thank our friends, brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe for such a warm reception! Together we are united!

May God bless you all!

And may God bless the lands of Zimbabwe and Malawi!

Dr Joyce Banda
Republic of Malawi.
