ACB arrests government Chief Tourism Officer in “Cashgate Scandal”0 Comments

The Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Leonard Kalonga, Chief Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife on suspicion that he connived with different people to defraud the Malawi Government.

ACB’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala said in August, 2013, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that the suspect was conniving with different people to defraud the Malawi Government.

Ndala said following the tip, the Bureau immediately instituted investigations where it was found that Leonard Kalonga had corruptly acquired the services of various people owning companies and defrauded the Malawi Government of large sums of money.

“On 17th October, 2013, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Leonard Kalonga and he will be taken to court for him to be charged after he has been interrogated on the matter.

“He may be charged with corrupt use of official powers which is contrary to Section 25 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 319 of the Penal Code,” said Ndala.
