Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President, Lazarous Chakwera, who will also be the party’s torch bearer in 2014 tripartite elections, has revealed that he will contest for the position of member of parliament in Lilongwe north west constituency.

Chakwera made the revelation on Saturday when he, alongside his wife went to register for the next year’s elections at Malembo Primary school in the area of traditional authority Khongoni in Lilongwe district.

Asked if he was harbouring any plans of running as a parliamentarian after his registration, Chakwera said he will stand on his party’s ticket as a member of parliament for the area….

Malawi’s Electoral Commission (MEC) has established a task force to organize the country’s first ever presidential debate in the run up to general elections on May 20, according to Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the electoral body’s director for media affairs.

Fifty-nine Malawian young men and women have left for the United Arab Emirate of Dubai in a labour export deal, President Joyce Banda disclosed on Saturday. ‘I didn’t want to announce this until the youths had left the country,’ she said at the opening of the National Youth Initiative in the southern district of Neno.

Banda was apparently referring to a similar botched labour export deal with South Korea.

Banda and former Labour Minister Eunice Makangala announced that Lilongwe and Seoul had struck a deal where up to 100,000 Malawian youths would work in the Asian country’s agriculture and hospitality…

Traditional Chiefs in the country have asked Government to ban sachet liquor beer which they argue is contributing to a number of problems facing the youth in the country.

The chiefs also claim that because sachets are cheap and easily accessed, many youth have lost focus in life and involved in immoral behavior.

Four female and 28 male students (32 in total) from Bunda College of Agriculture and the Natural Resources College are said to have left the country for Israel to do studies in intensive training for a period of 11 months from mid-October 2013 to end-August 2014.

According to a press statement from thePresidential Initiative on Poverty and Hunger Reduction (PIPaHR) said the students left the country on Monday, October 28.
