theo thomson awakeMalawi music industry had a sigh of relief when a locally produced music video was shown on the world’s biggest American television station, Music Television Base (MTVBase). The video, ‘Awake’ by Theo Thomson was premiered on Monday becoming the first ever Malawian video to be televised on the station.

Commenting on the development, the singer said he is happy to put Malawi music on the international map. “I’ve managed to get my foot in the door. Help me knock the door off its hinges and get Malawian music into international scene again,” he said. Thomson further thanked his youthful director and producer Ronald Zeleza for working hard on the video, saying it was not a walk in the park and it finally paid off.

Zeleza said this development is as a result of hard work, emphasizing the point that it was a long hard road. “This is a dream come true. This is another big step in Malawian music, we are asking everyone in the country to support us,” he said.

Thomson made headlines in 2009 when his ‘Stutter featuring Yesaya’, ‘so amazing featuring Tay Grin’ and ‘Kutentha” music videos were constantly beamed on Africa’s biggest music television Channel O. Meanwhile, there is a campaign on social media asking Malawians to vote or request for the video to get more airplay on the channel.

“If you have Twitter please tweet to @mtvbaseafrica asking them to play Theo Thomson – Awake and put a #tweetrequest in the tweet too. The more times you tweet the better as they count tweets every day,” Thomson explained.
