After his release from prison Nelson Mandela travelled to many countries in Africa and abroad to thank those who had supported the ANC during the years of struggle and to implore them to continue to pressurize for democratic transformation in South Africa. Nelson Mandela shakes hands with His Excellency Hastings Banda, Life President of Malawi, during talks held at the Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, Malawi. Hastings Kamuzu Banda (15 February 1898 – 25 November 1997) was the leader of Malawi (formally Nyasaland) After receiving much of his education overseas, Banda returned to home to speak against colonialism and advocate for independence. In 1963, he was appointed as Prime Minister of Nyasaland, and in 1964 led the country to independence as Malawi.
