Malawi invites bids for President Banda’s plane to raise much-needed revenue

The cash-strapped southern African country on Monday announced that it will be inviting bids for President Joyce Banda’s jet as it tries to raise much-needed revenue.

“The Malawi government has decided that the jet should be disposed of ‘on as-is basis’ to an interested individual or firm,” the president’s office said in a tender notice.

The Dassault Falcon 900EX, built in 1998 and which seats 14 passengers, was in “perfect flying condition”, according to the notice.

Malawi President Joyce Banda has called for more Chinese investors to Malawi, saying this would contribute to the country’s Economic Recovery Plan (ERP).

The Malawi president said this over the weekend during the official opening of the state of the art shopping mall owned by Chinese company Sogecoa in capital Lilongwe.

President Banda said the opening of the new shopping mall marked another mile stone of Chinese investment in Malawi following the opening of the 4-Star Golden Peacock Hotel in 2011 owned by the same Sogecoa Company in the capital.

Malawi Group Demands Improved Economy

In Malawi, civil society groups have expressed concern that President Joyce Banda is not doing enough to stimulate the nation’s economy.

Ms. Banda became president eight months ago following the death of president Bingu Wa Mutharika.

Billy Mayaya, a leading member of the Civic and Political Space Platform group says the civil society groups will soon begin a series of nationwide protests to pressure Ms. Banda to create jobs.
