Malawi, Mozambique sign power interconnector agreement, science and security pacts

Governments of Malawi and Mozambique on Wednesday signed three pacts in the areas of power, science and technology, and immigration and public security.

The signing of the agreements took place at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe after the visiting Mozambican President Armando Guebuza held bilateral talks with President Dr. Joyce Banda.

Malawi, Botswana commit on sharing resources, expertise

The governments of Malawi and Botswana have committed to sharing resources and expertise in a number of areas that will immediately see Botswana providing Malawi a soft loan of U$10 million for the latter’s agriculture and health sectors.

The loan will also help the country improve its fuel situation.

The commitments were made during bilateral talks between Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda and her Botswana counterpart Lt General Seretse Khama Ian Khama and their officials in Gaborone on Monday where the Malawi President is on a two-day state visit.

The president of Malawi, Mrs Joyce Banda (Dr), have created a facebook page to interact with Malawians and friends of Malawi.

While some have been reluctant to believe that the page is genuine, a good number of people still think it’s a “fake one”, there is a message on the page stating that it is an official page. Malawi is to reprint thousands of presidential portraits to add “Doctor” to Joyce Banda’s name, the government said Friday, raising eyebrows amid a tough austerity drive.

South Korea’s Jeonju University last week awarded Banda an honorary doctorate for her no-nonsense reforms since taking office.

“We want to reflect the new title of the President as she will be addressed by Malawians and the whole world,” Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu said.

The cash-strapped southern African country on Monday announced that it will be inviting bids for President Joyce Banda’s jet as it tries to raise much-needed revenue.

“The Malawi government has decided that the jet should be disposed of ‘on as-is basis’ to an interested individual or firm,” the president’s office said in a tender notice.

The Dassault Falcon 900EX, built in 1998 and which seats 14 passengers, was in “perfect flying condition”, according to the notice.

US Universities to Offer Malawi 100 Scholarships Annually

Malawi will in the next few years partner with ten international universities that will be offering 100 scholarships to Malawian students each year.

Founder of a United States of America charity organisation 100 X Development Foundation Lindy Blanchard told Zodiak Online that the initiative will bring together various universities together from the USA.

Ms Blanchard spoke in Lilongwe when her organisation offered scholarships to three girls to study in the United States of America.

President Joyce Banda calls for more Chinese investors

Malawi President Joyce Banda has called for more Chinese investors to Malawi, saying this would contribute to the country’s Economic Recovery Plan (ERP).

The Malawi president said this over the weekend during the official opening of the state of the art shopping mall owned by Chinese company Sogecoa in capital Lilongwe.

President Banda said the opening of the new shopping mall marked another mile stone of Chinese investment in Malawi following the opening of the 4-Star Golden Peacock Hotel in 2011 owned by the same Sogecoa Company in the capital.
