A Talented Young Lady Swims for Orphans in Malawi

This Saturday 9th February, 17 year old Kaitlin Harthoorn, and Milko van Gool, will be swimming across Lake Malawi to raise money for the Adziwa Orphan Care project in Kauma Village, outside Lilongwe.  Departing from Makinjira before dawn, Kaitlin and Milko, with a support boat at their side, plan to take about 9 hours to swim the 25km distance to Senga Bay, to beat the current record set two and a half years ago. Rarely has such a feat been attempted, and never by someone so young. For most people, running 25km would be a great achievement, so swimming that distance is barely comprehensible. U.S. Embassy in Malawi Celebrates Black History Month 2013

Each February, Americans celebrate Black History Month, an opportunity to honor the achievements and celebrate the rich heritage of African Americans.

The2013 Black History theme is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: the Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington” to celebrate the anniversary of two important African American turning points – the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation and the 1963 March on Washington.

To commemorate Black History Month 2013, the U.S. Embassy in Malawi has scheduled various activities, including writing competition for secondary school students, film screenings and educational outreach at secondary schools and colleges across the country.  We will also have…
