Cut out international medical service privileges for govt officials – MP

Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Centre, Shadreck Jonas, has demanded that senior government officials lose their privileges of being referred to hospitals outside Malawi when in critical health condition.

He said this in Parliament on the afternoon of Tuesday, in reference to a succession of predicaments that has been hitting Kamuzu Central Hospital recently where, among others, the hospital had been administering expired drugs to patients.

He argued that this privilege made the government officials disregard the serious problems that the local hospitals were facing.

Two Malawians held with 31kg of drugs at an Indian airport

In one of the biggest drugs haul ever, customs officials on Sunday caught two foreign nationals at Sardar Vallabhbhai international airport with over 31 kg of drugs. The two foreigners, a man and a woman, were in their early 20s. They were caught illegally carrying ephedrine hydrochloride (known as a ‘party drug’ ) worth Rs 25-30 lakh, almost us$60,000. In December last year, customs officials had seized 7 kg of ketamine.

ACB arrests government Chief Tourism Officer in “Cashgate Scandal”

The Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Leonard Kalonga, Chief Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife on suspicion that he connived with different people to defraud the Malawi Government.

ACB’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala said in August, 2013, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that the suspect was conniving with different people to defraud the Malawi Government.

Ndala said following the tip, the Bureau immediately instituted investigations where it was found that Leonard Kalonga had corruptly acquired the services of various people owning companies and defrauded the Malawi Government of large sums of money.

Ministry of Agriculture official in for defiling step daughter

Police in Ntcheu have arrested Sapita Banda, an animal handler in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security based at Bilira Extension Planning Area (EPA) for impregnating his 15-year-old step daughter.

According to Ntcheu Public Relations Officer, Gift Matewere, the victim went to her home village where her aunts suspected her of being pregnant.

He said the girl was then taken to hospital with the aunts where it was established that she was expectant.

Matewere said after quizzing her, the girl mentioned her step father as the one who was responsible for the pregnancy saying he has been defiling her…

Nkhotakota, October 12: Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood officials have said both men and women must retire child bearing at the age of 35 years or stand a risk of having a child with motivation deficiency disorder.

Around 800 people arrested in Lilongwe, criminals and illegal immigrants.

Over 800 hundred people have been arrested in Malawi’s administrative capital, Lilongwe in a joint operation between the Malawi Defense Forces and the Malawi Police Service.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the Center, Kingsily Dandaula has confirmed the operations and the arrests. He disclosed those arrested are being kept in various police cells around the capital.

According to Dandaula the operation which started Thursday night is aimed at cleansing the city off criminals, stolen items and illegal immigrants.
