In one of the biggest drugs haul ever, customs officials on Sunday caught two foreign nationals at Sardar Vallabhbhai international airport with over 31 kg of drugs. The two foreigners, a man and a woman, were in their early 20s. They were caught illegally carrying ephedrine hydrochloride (known as a ‘party drug’ ) worth Rs 25-30 lakh, almost us$60,000. In December last year, customs officials had seized 7 kg of ketamine.

The arrested persons, Fraser (22) and Maria (23), belong to Malawi in south-east Africa. They were scheduled to board an Emirates flight to Dubai at 4 am on Sunday and from Dubai they were to travel to Malawi.

It was the airline officials who alerted customs officials about some suspicious substance the duo was carrying. As many as 103 packets of the drug were hidden in sachets sewed to the inside of dresses. The sachets were stitched to the dress material at the place of Maria’s friend in New Delhi.

The accused had arrived from Delhi on Saturday night and stayed at a small hotel in Sardarnagar for three hours. The drugs were bought from the northern part of the country, the officials said. The accused used to change airports every time and preferred smaller airports for easier transit compared to Delhi and Mumbai.

Ephedrine hydrochloride is used by bodybuilders and other sportspersons for enhancing performance. It is a chemical which is produced in large quantities in India for the production of anti-cold and anti-allergy medicines. It can also be illegally used as raw material for manufacturing hallucinogenic drugs such as crystal meth and methamphetamine also known as Meth and Speed.
