I write to you from the beautiful Ethiopian city of Bahir Dar, located on Lake Tana, as we finalize preparations for the Centenary celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity, which became the African Union in 2002 and laid the foundations for what is now our Confederation of African States (CAS).

It is the time for African fashion, says leading Malawian designer

When Malawian fashion designer Lilly Alfonso was just six years old, she would attack her clothes with a pair of scissors to modify dresses into a design of her choice, much to her mother’s despair. However, when she was a bit older, her clothing alterations and designs caught the attention of friends and family who started asking her to do the same to their clothes.

“So I started charging people for my services. Before I did it just for fun,” Alfonso told How we made it in Africa.

At the age of 24 she started her tailoring business…
