Concern as HIV-positive Malawians abandon ARVs on church advice

More than 2,600 people living with HIV in Balaka district in southern Malawi have allegedly abandoned the anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs following advice from some religious leaders, APA learnt here Tuesday. Malawi Interfaith AIDS Association (MIAA) executive director Robert Ngaiyaye said the development has led to an increase in AIDS-related deaths in the area.

“The development is undermining efforts by government and other cooperating partners in increasing access to drugs and medication for the condition,” he said.

He said some religious beliefs promoted divine healing without encouraging confirmation by health professionals.

A MOTHER-OF-TWO who fled the poverty of Malawi believes coming to Derby saved her family’s lives.

Joyce Kantchowa said her “life was not worth living” in the nation which is considered to be among the world’s least developed.

She fled with her daughter, Chimwemwe, now 14, and her son, Edigar, nine, and then spent seven years as an asylum seeker before the family was granted permission to stay in the UK permanently this year.
